The Aquinas women's lacrosse team hosted #6 Lawrence Tech for a huge WHAC contest on Thursday afternoon (Apr. 15) for senior day honoring Amelia Bartels, Alyssa Chartier, and Paulina Thomas. The Saints ran into a tough opponent at the AQ Athletic Field and were unable to stop the Lawrence Tech offense as they dropped to the Blue Devils 17-5. The loss moves Aquinas to 5-3 overall, 4-2 WHAC.
The aggressive Blue Devils offense notched 11 goals in the first half as AQ just netted one by freshman Kennadie Minerich. The goal was assisted by McKenna Burke, for her first assist of the season.
Lawrence Tech continued the energy, scoring the first four goals of the first half to go up 15-1. The Saints were able to grab some of the momentum in the last twenty minutes as Alex Sullivan netted a goal at the 17:29 mark, assisted by Minerich.Â
AQ netted three more goals before time expired but were unable to cut into the Blue Devils lead. The three goals were scored by Cierra Davis, senior Chartier, and Lauren Hansen. The Blue Devils ended the game with a 17-5 final. The win improves LTU to a 2-2 overall record and are 2-0 in conference play.Â
In goal in the first half for the Saints was Azariah Wells who totaled four saves for Saints. Coming into goal for the second half was Maddie Sova-Dombrowski who played 30 minutes and allowed just six Blue Devils goals. The Blue Devils outshot AQ (27-15) but Aquinas took the edge on free-position shots, 9-6.Â
Naomi Plant finished with two assists for AQ and added three draw controls and a caused turnover. Hansen notched a goal, three ground balls, one caused turnover, and one draw control. Minerich posted three ground balls and a draw control in addition to her goal and assist. Chartier also added three ground balls along with her goal.
The Saints return to play this Sunday (Apr. 18) as AQ travels to Livonia, Michigan to face the Crusaders of Madonna in another big WHAC matchup. The game is set to begin at 12:00 PM.
