The Aquinas men's lacrosse team hosted UM-Dearborn in a non-conference matchup for the regular season finale on Saturday night (Apr. 17). The Saints honored seven seniors prior to the game and topped the Wolverines by a 18-13 score. The win improves Aquinas to a 4-3 overall record, 3-2 WHAC.
The Saints grabbed the advantage in the first quarter out shooting the Wolverines, 17-7. Aquinas netted five goals in the first by five different Saints. AQ had the slight 5-3 advantage heading to the second quarter. AQ netted the first goal of the second, as Mitch Haggart scored his second of the contest.
UM-Dearborn went on a 3-0 scoring streak to tie the game at six goals a piece. The Saints answered going on a 3-0 run themselves as Hunter Roberts scored his first, Haggart completed a hat trick, and Jake Lee tallied his first of the game. Aquinas grabbed the 9-6 at halftime.
The Wolverines netted the first two goals out of halftime bringing the game within one score. The Aquinas offense cracked open the scoring afterwards tallying the next seven goals to earn the large 16-8 lead. The Wolverines went on a 5-2 to close the game but weren't able to cut into the Aquinas lead.
Aquinas totaled 53 shots in today's contest as the Wolverines only finished with 35. AQ goalkeeper Jack Kordek played the whole 60 minutes and posted eight saves for the Saints.
The Saints were led offensively by Haggart and Zachary Sweet who each tallied five goals. Haggart notched five ground balls and two caused turnovers while Sweet added three ground balls for AQ.
Matt Conrad finished with six points, totaling two goals and four assists. Conrad also had three ground balls. Walker West tallied two goals and two assists. W. West also added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Nash West finished with three assists and three ground balls. Roberts posted two goals and an assist for Saints. Also adding a goal was Kyle Gauthier.
AQ returns to play on Wednesday (Apr. 21) as the Saints compete in the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The tournament details have not been released yet. The opponent, time, and place still have yet to be determined.
