The Aquinas softball team traveled to Dearborn, Michigan to take on the Wolverines of UM-Dearborn in a big WHAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 18). Big bats and three home runs for the Saints in the two contests carried them to the win over the Wolverines by scores of 11-2 and 12-4.
Izzy Dawson batted in three of the first four runs for the Saints in the first and second innings. A single in the first that scored Brooke Wila and a single in the second to score Sydney Dawson and Natalie VanDerHaegen along with a solo home run from Courtney Hardin earned AQ the quick 4-0 jump.
Another solo home run, this time from Darrien Roberts, extended the lead to five for AQ in the third. The Wolverines notched two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2 Aquinas advantage. The Saints came to the top of the fourth grabbing four runs on five hits and no errors. AQ closed the five-inning game one tallying two more, batted in Hardin.
Hardin hit 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Wila also hit 2-3 with a run and a double. Also notching a double was Jordan Humitz who hit 2-4. VanDerHaegen earned two RBIs, hitting 1-2 while I. Dawson and Kallie Sears both hit 2-4. Leah Ash (7-2) earned the win on the mound for AQ.
In game two, the Saints and Wolverines went into the second inning at a tied 1-1 score. AQ came to the top of the second exploding on the offensive end tallying nine runs. Batting in runs was Sears, I. Dawson (doubled), Roberts, Leigha Morse, and S. Dawson (doubled).
Aquinas led 10-1 going into the fifth before the Saints notched two more runs on a 2-run home run from Humitz. UM-Dearborn tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth but AQ posted three outs to clinch the five-inning victory, 12-4. The pair of wins advances Aquinas to a 19-7 overall record, 11-3 WHAC. The losses move UM-Dearborn to 6-6 overall, 6-6 WHAC.
VanDerHaegen hit 3-3 in game two and tallied two runs for AQ. Sears hit 2-2 with a double. Morse hits 2-3 with a double and two runs. I. Dawson hit 2-4 and earned two RBIs and a double. Roberts was 2-3 with two RBIs for Aquinas. Leah Vaughan (5-4) earned the win on the mound in game two pitching 4.1 innings, posting just three earned runs and a strikeout.
AQ returns to play on Tuesday (Apr. 20) as the Saints travel to Howell, Michigan to face Cleary in another big WHAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM against the Cougars.
