Aquinas Takes Two From Siena Heights in Road Doubleheader

The Aquinas softball team traveled to Adrian, Michigan to face Siena Heights for the battle of the Saints in a big WHAC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon (Apr. 22). The visiting AQ took home a pair of victories over SHU by 6-2 and 7-1 scores. The wins advance Aquinas to a 21-7 overall record, 13-3 WHAC.

AQ got on the board in the first game in the second inning as Courtney Hardin hit a solo home run over left field. Aquinas tallied two more runs in the top of the second as Izzy Dawson singled through the left side to drive in Brooke Wila, and then scored on the next play on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder. The visiting Saints earned the 3-0 jump.

An error by Siena's first baseman on a Kallie Sears grounder caused Wila to score. Humitz drove in two more on a double to right field. AQ notched a 6-0 lead heading into the sixth as both teams were scoreless in the fifth. Aquinas allowed just two runs in the sixth inning, but earned the first game win by a 6-2 score.

Wila, I. Dawson, Hardin, and Natalie VanDerHaegen all batted 2-4 in game one. I. Dawson posted two runs and an RBI. Humitz and I. Dawson both notched doubles in the contest while Hardin had the homer. Sears hit 1-3 with two runs. Earning the win on the mound for the Saints was Kayla Fessenden (8-0). She allowed just two runs and added a strikeout. Leah Ash also had a strikeout.

In game two, AQ tallied a run each in innings two, three, and four. Leigha Morse doubled to drive in Humitz in the second, a single from I. Dawson in the third batted in one, and a single from Hardin in the fourth grabbed AQ the 3-0 lead.

In inning five, the visiting Saints tallied two as Humitz tripled to score two. With Aquinas leading 5-0, Siena Heights tallied one in the bottom of the fifth to make a 5-1 game. Pinch hitter Taylor Charon doubled to right center field to drive in two more runs for AQ (Haley Myers and Breanne Adamczak). Aquinas earned the huge 7-1 win over SHU in game two. The losses move Siena Heights to an 11-9 overall record, 2-4 WHAC.

Ash started in game two and pitched all seven innings for AQ, allowing just one run. Siena Heights only tallied four hits off of her. Ash posted four strikeouts and walked none.

Wila hit 2-4 also in game two with a run. Humitz went 1-3 with two RBIs and a run. Darrien Roberts, Morse, and Charon all posted doubles while Humitz had the triple.

Aquinas is first in the conference standings and will return to play tomorrow (Apr. 23) as AQ travels to Howell, Michigan to face Cleary. The big WHAC doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 PM against the Cougars.
