Aquinas Falls to #6 Lawrence Tech in WHAC Semifinals

Saints finish 2021 with 6-4 record, 5-2 in WHAC play

The Aquinas women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-6 decision to #6 Lawrence Tech on Thursday night (Apr. 22) in the WHAC Tournament semifinals at the AQ Athletic Field. The second-seeded Saints hung tight with the high-powered Blue Devils in the first half before LTU pulled away in the second half to advance to Saturday's (Apr. 24) championship game.

Thursday's semifinal was a matchup for the second (Aquinas) and third (LTU) seeds in the tournament. With the loss, AQ falls to 6-4 overall. Although the Saints were listed in the 'Receiving Votes' column of the most recent top-10 NAIA Coaches poll, it appears unlikely that the Saints will earn a spot in the 2021 NAIA Women's Lacrosse Championship on May 5-8.

Lawrence Tech improves to 6-3 on the year and will host fourth-seed Siena Heights in the tournament championship game on Saturday. Siena Heights upset top seed Concordia to advance to the finals.

On Thursday, the Blue Devils scored the first four goals and appeared that they would run away with the game, but Aquinas countered. Goals from Katelyn Hall, Alyssa Chartier, and Cierra Davis in a five-minute span made it a 5-3 game at the 16:54 mark of the opening half.

The teams traded the next four goals, with Davis scoring twice more and making it a 7-5 contest right before the 10-minute mark. LTU went ahead 8-5 with 9:26 to play and neither team would score for nearly nine minutes; the Blue Devils tallied goals at the 44-second and 1-second marks of the half to take a 10-5 lead to intermission.

Lawrence Tech netted the first six goals of the second half and pulled away for the semifinal victory. The Blue Devils held a 37-14 advantage in shots and led in ground balls, 25-14. AQ nearly equaled LTU in draw controls, as the Blue Devils led 14-13.

Azariah Wells made 13 saves in the game. Davis scored on all four of her shots on goal, while also winning six draw controls. Hall and Chartier tallied the other goals. Kennadie Minnerich, Naomi Plant, and Alex Sullivan all registered an assist.

Amelia Bartels added three draw controls and Carli Taylor secured two draw controls and a pair of ground balls. Minerich and Chartier each picked up two ground balls.
