The Aquinas men's tennis team notched a 7-0 sweep over visiting Lourdes in the WHAC Quarterfinals on Saturday (Apr. 24) at the MVP Sportsplex in Grand Rapids. It was the second time AQ has swept the Gray Wolves this season, with the victory moving the Saints to the tournament semifinals next week.
Aquinas defeated Lourdes by a 7-0 score on Mar. 12 in regular season play before the team's rematch on Saturday. The fourth-seeded Saints moved to 4-4 with the victory, while fifth-seed Lourdes finishes the year with a 3-8 record.
AQ won the doubles point by capturing victories in both matches.
Max Goldbeck-Lowe and
Joel Hancox earned a 6-3 win at #1 doubles, while
Nicholas Klak and
Simon Uhlen were victorious at #2 doubles in a 6-1 victory. Lourdes defaulted at #3 doubles.
Goldbeck-Lowe earned a tough 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win at #1 singles and Hancok was on the winning end at #2 singles by a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 score. Klak did not lose a point at #3 singles, 6-0 and 6-0.
Mariano Arroyo collected a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #4 singles, while
Brandon McEachern was victorious at #5 singles, 6-2 and 6-1. Lourdes withdrew from #6 singles.
The Saints advance to the WHAC semifinals next Wednesday (Apr. 28) at top-seeded UNOH in Lima, Ohio.
