The Aquinas baseball team dropped a Monday afternoon (Apr. 26) doubleheader in Lima, Ohio, as the Saints fell to UNOH in both ends of the twinbill. The home Racers took game one by an 8-1 score, while AQ led 8-6 late in game two before UNOH prevailed with a 10-8 comeback victory.
It was the second consecutive doubleheader for the Saints, as AQ played a pair of games LMCU Ballpark on Sunday (Apr. 25), splitting the twinbill with UM-Dearborn. With Monday's results, Aquinas is 21-22 overall and 4-12 in WHAC play, while UNOH improves to 19-15 on the season and 10-6 in league action.
The Racers outhit AQ in game one, 11-6. UNOH scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings to hold a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the home team took control with a four-run inning to open an 8-0 cushion.
AQ's run came in the eighth on a
Brady Paganelli single to third base that scored
Michael Maher.
Braden Nawrocki went 2-for-3 and
Dane Smitz was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Mason Hill (2-3) took the loss despite striking out nine batters in six innings on the bump.
Tyler Zomerlei worked a hitless seventh and
Dawson Rabb tallied a strikeout in a scoreless eighth inning.
UNOH held a 3-1 lead in game two when Nawrocki delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to score
Alex Strickland and make it a 3-2 game. The Racers responded and scored three times to take a 6-2 lead after four innings.
In the fifth, Maher brought in a run on an infield single to score
Mark Binkowski. Strickland immediately followed with a three-run homer to right field to tie the game at 6-6. It is Strickland's third roundtripper of the season. AQ took the lead in the sixth on a
Jacob Ramont double to center field to bring in
Dominic Guzman, then Ramont scored later on a
Nathan Wilcox sacrifice fly for the 8-6 Saints advantage.
The Racers answered with a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh and took the lead with a two-run double in the eighth, which was too much for the Saints to overcome.
Grant Smitz allowed six runs in 5.1 innings to start the game, striking out six Racers.
Colin Smith (3-2) suffered the loss, giving up two earned runs in 2.2 innings of relief.
Ramont went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while
Ryan Gillings finished 2-for-4 with a double. Strickland was 1-for-4 with his homer, a pair of runs scored, and three RBI. Wilcox also doubled and drove in a run.
The Saints close the home portion of their regular season schedule on Wednesday (Apr. 28), when AQ hosts Siena Heights at 2:00 p.m. at the WMSC Sports Complex in Rockford.
