The Aquinas men's soccer team notched an important 2-1 road victory on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 3) at Concordia, as the Saints tallied a late goal to win their fourth straight game. For the third time this season, freshman
Jasper Schinkel scored a game-winner for Aquinas, notching the winning tally in the 77th minute.
With four straight wins, AQ improves to 9-2 on the season and 7-2 in WHAC play. The Saints have outscored their last four opponents by a 10-1 margin. Concordia is 3-9 overall and 2-7 in conference action.
Aquinas took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, when
Theo Maye netted his seventh goal of the season. After a Concordia yellow card, Maye took a free kick from 30 yards out and put a beautiful strike past the Cardinal keeper for the early advantage.
It remained a 1-0 game until the 55:13 mark, when Concordia scored the equalizer. 21 minutes later, Schinkel's late-game magic struck again.
Andrea Ghiggini delivered a thru pass to Schinkel and after a couple touches, beat the Concordia goalie on the left side of the net for the 2-1 lead.
Over the final 13-plus minutes, Aquinas was unable to register a shot, but prevailed despite multiple CUAA corners and shots, with goalie
Jared Ireland making a pair of saves in the final six minutes to preserve the win.
In his second straight start, Ireland earned a win, allowing just one goal and making eight saves. The Saints held a slight 17-16 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corners.
It was Schinkel's third game-winning goal this season. The freshman also notched winning goals against Lawrence Tech (1-0) on Mar. 17 and Madonna (3-2 OT) on Feb. 26. Saturday's tally was his fifth goal this year.
Maye, Schinkel,
Fin Pittock, and
Steffano Riley all put a pair of shots on goal, with Riley taking a game-high four shots.
Aquinas will head to Spring Arbor for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference matchup on Tuesday (Apr. 6) against the Cougars.
