The #17 Aquinas women's soccer team scored in both halves of Wednesday's (Apr. 7) WHAC semifinal game at the AQ Athletic Field and held Cornerstone without a shot until the final two minutes, as the Saints posted the 2-0 shutout victory. Top-seeded Aquinas will host the WHAC Championship this Saturday (Apr. 10) at the AQ Athletic Field.
With the win, the regular season champion Saints move to 13-1 on the season and beat Cornerstone for the second time this year, following a 5-1 victory on Mar. 17, also at AQ. The fourth-seeded Golden Eagles end their season with a 6-4-1 record.
Third-seeded Madonna upset #20 UNOH by a 1-0 score in Wednesday's other semifinal. Aquinas will host Madonna in this Saturday's finals at a time to be determined. It is a rematch of the 2018 WHAC Championship game, which AQ won by a 3-0 final over the Crusaders at the AQ Athletic Field.
On Wednesday night, Aquinas owned a dominant 22-1 advantage in total shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Cornerstone was called for 17 of the game's 25 fouls.
There was no score when the game was delayed in the 11th minute due to a lightning delay. 38 minutes later, the teams resumed play and after several close misses, AQ finally struck first at the 29:22 mark. Filippa Struxsjo played a short cross through the box to Hannah Crum, who had great position in front of the goalie. Crum, the WHAC Player of the Year, sent her shot to the upper right corner of the net for the opening goal and her 16th tally of the season.
AQ led 1-0 at the half and recorded all 16 shots in the opening 45 minutes, not allowing Cornerstone to attempt a single shot.
In the 68th minute, Cornerstone was whistled for a handball in the penalty box, setting up a free kick for the Saints. Struxsjo stepped up and drilled the free kick to the bottom right corner of net past the CU keeper for the big insurance goal. The tally was Struxsjo's seventh goal of the season.
After the 2-0 advantage, there would be only one shot the remainder of the game, as Cornerstone registered its first shot attempt in the 89th minute. Braeleigh McCoy stopped the attempt and earned the easy shutout victory, her seventh solo clean sheet this season.
Ariana Garcia attempted five shots, Crum totaled four shots, and both Struxsjo and Macy Hollingsworth each had three attempts. Crum and Hollingsworth each put two shots on goal.
The win was AQ's ninth shutout of the season.
