Saints Top UHSP in Four Sets, Stumble Against Mount Vernon

AQ defeats UHSP 3-1, but can't keep up with Mount Vernon being defeated 3-0

The Aquinas women's volleyball squad split another pair of decisions on Saturday (Aug. 21) at the Hansen Athletic Center auxiliary gym to bring their weekend record to 2-2. AQ started off the day hot against its first opponent, St. Louis Pharmacy, in a 3-1 victory. In the next match, Mount Vernon was too much to handle as the Saints volleyball squad was handed a 3-0 defeat.

Aquinas played tough competition this weekend. Ave Maria finished the weekend 4-0 and Mount Vernon finished 3-1.

In the 1:00 PM game, the Saints took the first, third, and fourth sets to earn a four-set victory by scores of 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, and 25-17. Mount Vernon outpaced Aquinas in the following matchup, taking down the Saints by scores of 19-25, 20-25, 14-25.

AQ overwhelmed the Eutectics in all statistics categories. The Saints led in kills (55-35), hitting percentage (.376-.104), assists (49-35), aces (8-6), digs (43-36), and blocks (13-3). The statistical dominance allowed the Saints to earn themselves a commanding victory.

Emily Jones set a career-best 17 kills with a massive .600 hitting percentage, along with a couple of digs and 3.5 blocks in the winning effort. Jackie Rozell, Abbi Perkins, and Abbie Harpenau shared the workload in the rest of the team's kills, with ten, nine, and nine kills respectively. Cassie Sustrich made her first career start, producing a solid 46 assists for the team.

Perkins, Rozell, and Harpenau managed a combined 9.5 blocks to keep the pressure on UHSP. Adrien Yondo was able to consistently keep the ball in the air with 16 digs in the match.

Against Mount Vernon, the Cougars edged the Saints in most statistical categories. They led in kills (42-30), hitting percentage (.250-.132), assists (40-29), aces (8-3), digs (54-46), and blocks (5-3).

Jones again led the way in kills for the Saints with nine. Sustrich had another good outing as the setter with 27 assists. Kenzi Dobosiewicz had a team-leading 13 digs.

Aquinas will play in another tournament next weekend in the Bethel/IU-South Bend Tournament (Aug. 27-28). The opponents will be Mount Mercy, Bethel, Campbellsville, and IU-South Bend.
