Aquinas Falls to Taylor 2-1 in Overtime

Liam Travers scores lone Saints goal in the second half to force the overtime period

The Aquinas men's soccer team was unable to get the road win against Taylor on Tuesday evening (Sept. 21). The non-conference matchup was played in Upland, Indiana as the Saints pulled even with the Trojans in the second half to force overtime, but ultimately fell by a 2-1 score at Turner Stadium.

The late goal by TU in the overtime period made the Saints' record fall to 0-3-1, while the Trojans' record improved to 5-2 in the win.

Taylor was the first to strike in the contest in the 16th minute as Clay Vander Kolk netted the opening goal. The rest of the first half was dominated by the defense as the Saints only got two shots off and the Trojans took four themselves.

Aquinas pulled even with Taylor in the 56th minute with Liam Travers scoring his first goal of the season. Theo Maye assisted on the play as he found Travers as he was able to beat the goalkeeper for the goal. The Saints held a bigger advantage in the shot department in the second half by an 11-3 margin.

In the overtime period, AQ was mostly on the defensive side of the field as TU held a 3-0 advantage in the extra period. Vander Kolk scored his second goal of the game off a corner kick with 1:24 remaining in overtime to seal the victory for the Trojans.

Antonio Strassioto (0-3-1) made the start in net for the Saints as he made two saves and allowed two goals. Sam Spiegel took the win for Taylor by making two saves and conceding one goal.

Aquinas outshot the Trojans 13-10 over the course of the game, but had three shots on net compared to Taylor's four. The Trojans held an advantage in corner kicks 8-6, while the Saints committed 10 fouls to Taylor's 13.

AQ will begin WHAC play against Cleary on Saturday, September 25 at the AQ Athletic Field, with kick-off scheduled for 12:00 PM.
