The Saints were able to take the doubles point and four out of six singles points to gain 5-2 win over Maple Leafs

The Aquinas men's tennis team was able to collect its first win of the 2021 fall season over Goshen on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 25). The Saints and Maple Leafs competed at the Goshen College Tennis Complex as AQ gained the doubles point and four out of the six singles matches in the 5-2 victory over GC.

After taking losses to Indiana Wesleyan and Olivet Nazarene last weekend, Aquinas (1-2) was able to come back and gain the win over Goshen whose fall record dropped to 5-9.

The Saints doubles team of Simon Uhlen and Max Goldbeck-Lowe suffered a 3-6 loss to Josh Friesen and Pedro Scattolon in the first doubles match. AQ was able to recover and gain the doubles point with Nicholas Klak and Joel Hancox taking a 6-1 win over Kevin Bollman and Insee Akaparan, while Brandon McEachern and Mariano Arroyo earned a 6-3 victory over Jonah Anderson and Mario Gomez. Michael Ha and Jackson VanBergen competed in an extra doubles match and took a dominant 6-0 win.

In the #1 singles match, Uhlen needed three sets to gain a win over Bollman 6-2, 2-6, and 10-7. Klak also needed three sets in the #2 singles win over Anderson 6-4, 2-6, and 10-5.

Goldbeck-Lowe was able to gain a close 6-4 and 7-5 win over Akaparan in the #3 singles match. Hancox was able to gain the final point for the Saints in the #4 singles match, defeating Friesen 7-6 and 6-1.

AQ was not able to gain victories in the #5 and #6 singles matches as McEachern dropped his match to Scattolon 4-6 and 0-6 and Arroyo was not able to overcome Gomez by being defeated 4-6 and 1-6.

The Saints were able to play three extra singles matches with VanBergen getting a 8-4 win over Wes Beck and Ha defeating Caleb Shenk 8-0, but John Elizalde fell to Joseph Moun in a tight 8-9 match.

The Saints finish up their fall portion of the schedule by traveling to Davenport on Friday (Oct. 1) and then hosting Lake Superior State on Saturday (Oct. 2). The road match against DU will begin at 5:00 PM and the home match against LSSU at the MVP Sportsplex will start at 2:00 PM.
