The Aquinas women's tennis team captured its first win of the 2021 fall season over Goshen on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 25). The Saints and Maple Leafs competed at the Goshen College Tennis Complex as AQ gained four out of the six singles matches to take the 4-3 victory over GC.
After taking losses to Indiana Wesleyan and Olivet Nazarene last weekend, Aquinas (1-2) was able to come back and gain the win over Goshen whose fall record dropped to 0-14.
The Saints doubles team of
Sofia Gomez and
Joska Volder took a 6-3 win over Sarah Hinshaw and Hannah McCoy in the first doubles match. However,
Mimi Pecheco and
Vanessa Heylmun dropped their doubles contest to Szofia Kallaz and Meghan Goosziz by 3-6 score. That loss coupled with the forfeit by AQ in the third doubles match due to not enough players gave the Maple Leafs the first point of the day.
In the #1 singles match, Gomez was able to defeat Kallaz in straight sets 6-3 and 7-5. Volder was able to double down in the #2 singles match by taking a dominate victory over Goosziz 6-3 and 6-0.
Pecheco, in the #3 singles match, was the only one to go to three sets and still came out with the victory over Hinshaw 6-3, 6-7, and 10-7. Heylmun had the most dominate victory of the day, defeating McCoy in the #4 singles match 6-0 and 6-0.
Jenna Hausman was the only Saint to drop a singles match, being defeated by Anna Osborne in a close #5 singles match 6-7 and 4-6. The Maple Leafs gained one more point by the forfeiture in the #6 singles match.
The Saints finish up their fall portion of the schedule by traveling to Davenport on Friday (Oct. 1) and then hosting Lake Superior State on Saturday (Oct. 2). The road match against DU will begin at 5:00 PM and the home match against LSSU at the MVP Sportsplex will start at 2:00 PM.
