Four-Goal Second Period Powers #8 Indiana Tech Past Aquinas 8-3

Byron Center, Mich. – The No. 15-ranked Aquinas men's hockey team took to the ice again tonight (Oct. 22) for the second of the two-game series against No. eight-ranked Indiana Tech. Tonight would be a repeat of last night as Indiana Tech would pick another 8-3 victory.

AQ is now 4-4 on the season with a 3-3 conference record.

AQ got off to an early lead in the first period as Matt Denhartigh scored a rebound goal off of Shane DiTullio's slap shot. That goal was Denhartigh's first of the season. Mason Stewart was credited with the second assist on the play. However, the Warriors would immediately respond with a goal just three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.

Just over a minute later, AQ would get its first powerplay of the game, but were unable to capitalize on it as IIT quickly killed off that powerplay. With 10:49 remaining on the clock, Darren Johnson would get a great scoring opportunity as the puck bounced to the right side of the rink. A big save from Riley Tucker of Indiana Tech would keep the score tied at one.

Aquinas would get another powerplay opportunity late in the first period, but IIT was, once again, stout on defense. AQ would get in penalty trouble themselves with just a few seconds to go in the powerplay, giving IIT a powerplay of its own at the end of the period. However, AQ would get a fantastic scoring opportunity shorthanded with a two-on-one chance. D. Johnson would swing a pass right to Brandon Rozema, who would rip a shot and then rebound his own shot for a goal, taking a 2-1 lead.

Both teams would enter the locker rooms with the score at 2-1. Both sides put 14 shot on target in the first period.

The second period was all Indiana Tech. IIT would score three goals within a five-minute stretch to take a 4-2 lead. With five minutes and 36 seconds left on the clock, AQ would pull a goal back as Danny Barry would score a goal from an absolutely improbable angle. Arthur Prukhitsky was credited with the assist on the goal.

As the period wound down to the end, the game began to get more chippy with both sides serving offsetting penalties multiple times. The Warriors would score on more time with 2:22 left on the clock to take a 5-2 lead entering the second intermission.

IIT outshot AQ 18-12 during the second period.

The visiting side continued to dominate in the third period. IIT outshot AQ 26-6 in the third period and added three more goals on to its total. The game would end with the score 8-3 in favor of the Warriors.

Max Johnston received the nod in net and saved 50 of 58 shots on target for a .862 save percentage.

Aquinas has a pair of home games next weekend against (RV) Purdue Northwest. The game on Friday (Oct. 28) is scheduled to begin at 9:00 PM and the game on Saturday (Oct. 29) is set to start at 7:30 PM. Both games will be played on home ice at Southside Ice Arena.
