Byron Center, Mich. — It wasn't exactly the 10-0 thrashing the Aquinas men's hockey team showcased Friday (Oct. 7) night on the road in Rochester, but a win is a win. The Saints scored a much-needed goal midway through third period to slip past the Warriors once again Saturday evening (Oct. 8) by a score of 3-2 at the Southside Ice Arena.
AQ's
Dylan Rumpke played a factor in all three goals, scoring the last two and assisting the other.
With the victory, Aquinas moves to 3-1-0 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. Rochester (0-2, 0-2 WHAC) opens the season with the pair of defeats against the Saints.
The Warriors scored first Saturday night on a goal from Bryce Patterson, assisted by Connor Fredericks and Anthony Cosner. The opening tally came roughly seven minutes into the contest and had the Saints re-evaluating the notation that this was just going to be another easy win. Rochester took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission despite being outshot 30-6.
Aquinas scored twice in a physical second period to regain control.
Danny Barry found the equalizer off a Rumpke pass 6:50 into the frame and then Barry returned the favor five minutes later by providing the assist on Rumpke's first goal to put the Saints ahead 2-1.
The second period intermission came early when an injured Rochester player had to be attended to on the ice. Both teams went to the locker room and later returned to finish out the final 1:38 of the period after the situation on the ice was handled by the medical staff.
The third period started immediately after the second period concluded. With heavy hearts and against the run of play, Rochester found its own equalizer early into the period. Cosner picked up the goal with Bobby Kukla and Caden Pachota taking the assists.
The Warriors' excitement was short-lived, as AQ's leading goal scorer Rumpke came through again with 10 minutes remaining. Rumpke, on the power play, notched his seventh goal in just four games so far this season. His 2.5 points per game pace is tied for ninth-best in the ACHA Division I.
Christian Look and
Arthur Prukhitsky assisted Rumpke's game-winning goal.
Aquinas ended up outshooting Rochester 79-15.
Randon Striplin picked up the win in net for the Saints.
AQ returns to action next weekend with a home-and-away series against conference foe UM-Dearborn. The Saints are at Southside Ice Arena on Friday (Oct. 14) starting 8 p.m. and then on the road Saturday (Oct. 15) with a 7 p.m. puck drop in Dearborn.
