Canton, Mich. – The AQ men's hockey squad was back on the ice tonight (Nov. 12) for the second of their two-game series against the Concordia Cardinals. CUAA got the best of AQ on its home ice last night (Nov. 11) and the Saints were looking to bounce back tonight. However, that would not be the case as a massive four-goal third period for the Cardinals would give Aquinas its second loss in as many nights. CUAA won the game 6-1.
The result moves AQ to 7-7-0 on the season with a 4-6-0 WHAC record. CUAA improves to 8-6-0 with a 6-6-0.
The game would start with both sides putting some shots on target early, but both goalies managed to keep the puck out of the net. This would change eight minutes and 46 seconds into the game as the Cardinals broke the stalemate. The Cardinals would receive a powerplay, but AQ managed to kill off the penalty. AQ would have five skaters on the ice for just 11 seconds as Tyler Bieniek would beat
Michael Allman for the first goal of the game.
Both sides would put a few more shots on goal and CUAA would receive yet another powerplay, but no scoring action would happen until the very end of the period.
Dylan Rumpke had his shot blocked by the defender with just 22 seconds left on the clock.
Alex Johnson would grab the rebound and slot the puck into the back of the net to tie the game. The goal was Johnson's seventh of the season. Rumpke and
Danny Barry were credited with the assists, their 12th and ninth of the season, respectively.
That goal would conclude the action for the first period with the score tied at 1-1. AQ outshot CUAA 18-15 in the first.
The tides would begin to turn a bit in the second period. CUAA would outshoot Aquinas 14-10 in the period and would take the lead again with 7:33 remaining in the period. Kyle Hebner would be the one to beat Allman to take the 2-1 lead.
Kirwin Johnson would receive some time in the box for roughing with roughly five minutes to go in the second, but the Cardinals would not be able to capitalize. Both teams would enter the locker rooms with the score still 2-1 in favor of CUAA.
The third period would be when the flood gates would open for Concordia. The Cardinals outshot the Saints 21-6 in the third period and four tack on four goals, two of which would be a result of powerplays. AQ struggled to manage much on the offensive side of the ice as Concordia played excellent defense. CUAA also transitioned the puck very well, leading to numerous scoring opportunities.
In total, CUAA outshot the Saints 50-34. Allman would save 44 of the 50 shots on net for a .880 save percentage. He now moves to 3-4 on the season with a .885 save percentage.
Aquinas will be looking to get back on track next weekend with a two-game series against the Cleary Cougars. AQ plays on the road next Friday (Nov. 18) and will return to Southside on Saturday (Nov. 19) for an 8:00 PM puck drop. Â
