Hudsonville, Mich. — After a 3-2 home win Saturday night, the rematch leg on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 13) was unkind to the Aquinas women's hockey team. Grand Valley State scored two unanswered goals in the second period to split the weekend series with a 4-2 home win at Griff's Georgetown.
The loss snapped the Saints (5-5) three-game winning streak.
Just like Saturday, both teams started fast with four goals being scored in the opening period. Two for each team. The Lakers (2-8) scored first 2:21 in the contest on a goal by Abby Rubsam, assisted by Marirose LeFevre. The Saints answered roughly six minutes later on an
Anna Castle goal with the helper going to
Reyna Dominczak.
GVSU regained the lead on an unassisted goal by Abbey McCallion with 7:08 remaining the first period. But, AQ got to the first intermission level at 2-2 when freshman defender
Kate Kramm notched her first collegiate goal three minutes later on a power play.
Alyssa Exline and
Darbi Poole, a couple of the Saints' top point getters this season, assisted Kramm's first goal.
Scoring early and then in the final minute of the second period, the Lakers iced the game away. LeFevre ended up with the game-winning goal on a power play coming 1:24 into the second period with assists going to Anna Braschwitz and Kayli Sassak. Then, with 45 seconds left before the second intermission, GVSU's Maya Ortiz up the Lakers' lead to 4-2 and made six different goal scorers in the game. Angie Schulz was credited with the assist.
No goals were scored in the third period. GVSU outshot AQ 37-25.
The Saints will look to regroup next weekend when they face the No. 14-ranked Concordia Cardinals in a home-and-away series. AQ will host the first game on Friday night (Nov. 18) with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop at the Southside Ice Arena. The second game will be played at 8 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 19) at Concordia's home rink, the Arctic Coliseum, in Chelsea, Mich.
