Tough Night for Aquinas as Lourdes Wins 80-62

Gabe Overway shines with 19 points, but Aquinas can't quite keep up with the Gray Wolves.

Sylvania, Ohio – The (4-4) Aquinas College men's basketball team returned to the hardwood tonight (Nov. 30) to take on the (6-2) Lourdes Gray Wolves. The young Aquinas team was looking to get back in the win column tonight after falling to Rochester and #17 Indiana Tech in the previous two games. However, Lourdes had other plans. The Grey Wolves would take a 2-0 lead and then proceed to never lose the lead, winning 80-62.

AQ now moves to 4-5 on the season with a 2-3 WHAC record. Lourdes improves to 7-2 with a 3-2 conference record.

Lourdes would quickly establish a strong lead just six minutes into the endeavor after a layup would give the Gray Wolves a 13-5 advantage. A quick three from Menalito McGee would narrow the Lourdes lead to just five points, but that would be the closest AQ would get to LU for the remainder of the half. The Gray Wolves would score nine points in the next minute and two seconds to take a commanding 14-point lead.

The Saints would close the gap back down to single-digits, but Lourdes would continue to pull away. The second half would end with the score 45-32 in favor of the home team. LU held a significant advantage in field goal percentage in the first half, outshooting AQ with an impressive 62.1 percent to AQ's 40 percent. The Gray Wolves also shot 60 percent from beyond the arc, scoring six of their ten three-point attempts.

Gabe Overway would take over the game to start the second half, scoring nine points in the first three minutes to help narrow the Lourdes lead back to just five points. However, LU would respond and explode offensively to take a 70-49 lead with just under ten minutes to play in the second half. The lead would be too much to overcome as the home team ended the game 80-62 after scoring a layup with just 18 seconds left to play.

The most notable performance of the night was Overway's 19 points as he shot eight-for-nine from the field. He also had five boards, two assists, a block, and a steal on the night.

Donovan Brown-Boyd would be the only other Saint to reach double-digit points as he scored ten points tonight. Brown-Boyd shot 4-12 and 2-7 from beyond the arc while also picking up five rebounds and two steals.

Notably, as a team, AQ shot very well from the free throw line. The Saints converted all four free throw attempts in the first half and scored four-of-five in the second half for an 88.9 percent conversion rate on the game.

Aquinas will be looking to snap its three-game losing streak at home this Saturday (Dec. 3) with a home matchup against UNOH. The two teams are scheduled to tipoff at 3:00 p.m. following the women's basketball game.
