Alven and Barnes Heroics Lead AQ to Comeback Win Against UNOH

Grand Rapids, MI - The women's basketball team was back home this weekend when hosting the UNOH Racers. The Saints trailed the Racers almost the full 40 minutes of regulation until Senior, Guard, Mauriya Barnes hit a 3-point shot from the wing to put AQ up 1 with 8 seconds left. The Saints were able to hold off UNOH in the final seconds to secure the victory. AQ moves to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play while UNOH falls to 5-4, and 3-3 in the WHAC.

UNOH struck first and hard in the first quarter of action, scoring 9 points before AQ could get on the board. The Saints first points came from two made free throws by Isabel Reemsnyder. This would get the gears turning for AQ. The two teams traded points back and forth until the quarter ended with the Racers up 16-11.

UNOH then got off to another fluid start with an 8-2 start. The Saints had trouble in the quarter finding the bottom of the net as they were only able to score 7 points in the 10 minutes. Mauriya Barnes scored all 7 points points. The two teams would head to the half 28-18.

The Saints would then begin to start closing the gap in the third quarter outscoring the Racers 13-10 to bring them within 7 heading into the fourth. JaKarri Alven lead the team this quarter scoring 6 points.

Alven would then take control of the game with 10 of AQ's 21 points in the Quarter. After a pair of free throws and a layup from Alven, AQ found themselves down two points (51-49) with 44 seconds left. Emily Cline then had the answer for AQ on defense with a steal at the wing. After the Saints took some time to set up their offense, Cline found Mauriya Barnes for the go ahead three to put the Saints up one with 8 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Saints committed a trio of fouls to wind the clock down and secure the victory for AQ.

JaKarri Alven led Aquinas in points (20) and rebounds (12) while Brighton Miller, Alexis Thomas, and Emily Cline each had two assists.

The Saints will be back in action Wednesday, December 7th, when they host the Concordia Cardinals at 5:30 PM.
