Saints Close Out 2022 With Loss to GVSU

Fourteen different Saints score in a 93-45 defeat against NCAA DII regional foe

Allendale, Mich. — The Aquinas men's basketball team wrapped up 2022 with a 93-45 road loss against NCAA Division II regional foe Grand Valley State.

It was the fifth meeting between the two schools since 2002 with GVSU now holding a 3-2 advantage. The contested counted for the Lakers (7-6), but was an exhibition game for the Saints and won't count against their current 6-8 overall record.

After AQ scored the first point on a free throw made by Andrew Larson, GVSU used an 8-0 run to take control in front of a home crowd of over 500 spectators inside the Fieldhouse Arena. The Saints fought back to get within two points at 8-6 on a jumper made by Tommy Gregwer.

However, by the end of the first half, GVSU had built up a 16-point lead, 42-26. It didn't get better for the Saints in the second half as the Lakers outscored AQ, 51-19, to secure a 93-45 victory.

Fourteen different Saints scored in the contest, led by Jared Dugener with seven points. Gabe Overway and Gregwer each chipped in with five points. AQ shot 31.9% from the field while GVSU shot 61.8%.

The Saints return to WHAC conference play on Wednesday (Jan. 4) at Concordia. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Ann Arbor, Mich.
