Grand Rapids, Mich. - The men's basketball team was back in action tonight as they welcomed WHAC Competitor, Concordia, to the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center. However, after 40 minutes of gameplay, the Saints were unable to keep up with the Cardinals as they fell by a score of 76-68.
Â
The Cardinals rise to 4-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Aquinas falls to 4-7 and 2-5 in conference play.
Â
The Saints jumped out to a quick lead in the first period going up 9-3 on the Cardinals. The two teams would go back and forth for a while until AQ would mount another lead going up 21-14 after a pair of three pointers from Menalito Mcgee and
Tommy Gregwer. The Cardinals would fly back into it though, scoring eight consecutive points.
Gabe Overway would score the next six points for the Saints as he put in work inside the paint. Just before the half,
Payton Harley would hit a free throw putting the Saints within four points of the Cardinals.
Â
Coming out of the break, the Saints looked to start off hot and they did. Unfortunately, so did the Cardinals as the two teams mirrored each other for the first three minutes with each team scoring seven points. Concordia would then go on a run putting themselves up 62-51 with eight minutes left to play. AQ would manage a small run of seven points putting them within four. However, that would be the closest they'd get for the rest of the game. The two teams would trade buckets the last five minutes, but the Saints were unable to mount a comeback, falling by a score of 76-68.
Â
Donovan Brown-Boyd led the Saints with 20 points, followed by McGee with 15 and Overway with 14. Harley would lead the team with five rebounds while McGee led the team with four assists.
Â
The Saints will be back in action on this Saturday (Dec. 10) to take on the Wolverines of UM-Dearborn. Aquinas is set to celebrate Holiday Hoops this Saturday as the men's game is schedule to tipoff at 3:00 PM inside of the Sturrus Center following the women's game.Â
