Aquinas Sweeps Weekend Matches with Win over Calvin

The Saints won their second match in two days with 6-0 sweep over the Knights

The Aquinas men's tennis team continued its impressive weekend with a shutout over Calvin on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 13) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The match took place at MVP Sportsplex as the Saints finished a 6-0 clean sweep over the Knights.

For the second day in a row, AQ was able to win all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Doubles partners Joel Hancox and Max Goldbeck-Lowe made quick work in the #1 match with a 6-2 victory. Tom Gangov and Brandon McEachern had the toughest doubles match of the three, but pulled out the #2 doubles thriller 7-6. Nicholas Klak and Simon Uhlen rounded out the sweep with a dominant 6-0 win in the #3 doubles.

Goldbeck-Lowe and Klak had the best performances in the singles matches. Goldbeck-Lowe took the #3 singles 6-0, 6-1, while Klak won the #5 singles match 6-1, 6-0. Hancox got his first win of the season in #1 singles matches by going 6-2, 6-2 over the Knights.

Uhlen moved to 3-1 in #4 singles on the season as he won 6-3, 6-0. Although he is new this semester, Gangov has secured his spot in the #2 singles spot by improving to 3-1 after winning 6-3, 6-4 today.

The #6 singles match was not able to finish due to court time constraints. Jackson VanBergen had dropped the first set 6-7, but he then turned around and won the second set 6-0. Mariano Arroyo was able to get in during one of the two extra singles matches and won 6-2, 6-1. John Elizalde played the other extra singles match and only got one set in and dropped it 8-6.

The Saints will be off until Friday (Feb. 25) when they travel to Midland, Michigan to take on Northwood at 10:00 AM.
