The Aquinas women's tennis team got its first win of the 2022 spring season over Calvin on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12). The Saints played the Knights at the MVP Sportsplex in Grand Rapids, Michigan as AQ took a commanding 4-2 win.
Sofia Gomez and
Joska Volder won the #1 doubles match 6-3 to kick-off the big day.
Mimi Pacheco and
Carlota Arzabe then swept the #2 doubles 6-0 to give the Saints the doubles point despite AQ forfeiting the #3 doubles match due to not having enough players. The big doubles wins propelled Aquinas into the singles matches with all the momentum.
The Saints captured wins in the top three singles matches to secure the remaining of their points on the day. Gomez took on the #1 singles match and got the win by taking the sets 6-3, 6-2. In her first match in the spring semester, Volder was dominate by sweeping the #2 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Newcomer Arzabe gained the final AQ point of the day in the #3 singles by winning the sets 6-2, 6-2.
The lone singles loss came in the #5 singles match where
Vanessa Heylmun was taken down 5-7, 2-6. The #4 singles match was cut short due to court time constraints, but Pacheco won the first set 7-5 and was down in the second set 3-4. The Knights got their second point on the day in the #6 singles match as AQ did not have a player to compete in it.
Aquinas will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 19) with two matches to be played down in South Bend, Indiana at Notre Dame's Eck Tennis Pavilion. The host will be Saint Mary's College and the Saints will play the Belles at 12:30 PM. AQ will also take on Spring Arbor at 3:30 PM.
