The Aquinas women's tennis team split two matches on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 19) down in South Bend, Indiana at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. In the first match, the Saints were able to defeat host Saint Mary's in a close 4-3 match, but in the second match Spring Arbor just edged AQ 3-4 in a neutral site match.
Against SMC, the Belles took the first point in the doubles matches as they were able to take two of the three matches. The Saints started off strong in the #1 doubles as
Sofia Gomez and
Joska Volder moved to 6-1 this season playing together after winning the match 8-1. In a close #2 doubles match,
Carlota Arzabe and
Mimi Pacheco ultimately fell by a score of 6-8. Unfortunately with only five players, AQ forfeited the #3 doubles pairings which gave Saint Mary's the point.Â
The Saints came back with vengeance in the singles matches, taking four out of the six to win the overall match. In the #1 singles, Gomez had her hands full winning the first set 6-3, but dropping the second 3-6. Ultimately she won the third set by a 10-6 score. The same thing happened to Volder in the #3 singles as she ended up taking the match 6-2, 4-6, 10-6. Arzabe won the #2 singles in straight sets at 6-3, 6-1 as did
Vanessa Heylmun in the #5 singles 6-4, 6-0.
Pacheco was the lone Saint that took a loss in the singles, going down in the #4 match 3-6, 3-6. The Belles also picked up a point in the #6 singles as AQ did not have a participant.Â
Aquinas was also not able to gain the doubles point against the Cougars in the second match. It was Gomez and Heylmun in the #1 doubles match this time as they won with ease 6-1. The duo of Arzabe and Pacheco went down in #2 doubles 3-6 and the forfeit in the #3 doubles gave SAU the point.
In the #2 singles match, it was Arzabe who went to three sets and came out on top in comeback fashion by the scores of 3-6, 6-2, 10-7. Volder took her #3 singles match in dominant fashion 6-1, 6-1 and then Heylmun also took #5 singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Gomez was tripped up in the #1 singles 2-6, 3-6 as well as Pacheco in #4 singles by the scores of 6-7, 0-6. The #6 singles match went to the Cougars by forfeit, giving them a 4-3 win.
Aquinas will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 25) with an early start against Northwood at 10:00 AM in Midland, Michigan.
