Aquinas Falls Victim to Rochester's High Octane Offensive Attack

The Saints could not keep up with the Warriors as they made 11 shots from three in the 80-63 loss

The Aquinas women's basketball team fell in the last game of the regular season to Rochester on Wednesday evening (Feb. 16) in Sturrus Center. The Warriors were able to make 31 shots with 11 of them coming from beyond the arc. The Saints were unable to keep pace in a fast game that resulted in an 80-63 defeat.

AQ now sits in sixth place in the WHAC with a 10-10 conference record and a 15-15 overall record. There are still four games to be played on Saturday that will determine seeding for the WHAC Tournament that runs from Feb. 22-Mar. 1.

The first quarter was the best for the Saints defensively as they held the Warriors to a 35% shooting percentage, but AQ was only able to muster up two made baskets and five free throws. The score was 15-9 heading into the second quarter after there was 15 combined turnovers in the first. Both offenses heated up in the next 10 minutes as Rochester scored nearly 30 points in the quarter. RU went 10-20 from the field with half of the made shots coming from downtown. Isabel Reemsnyder scored nine of the 19 AQ points in the stanza as she also hit a couple from behind the arc. The Saints did get the deficit down to one with 4:05 left on the clock, but the Warriors went on an 18-3 run to close out the half with the score reading 44-28 heading into the locker room.

Aquinas did not fold and outscored Rochester in the third quarter with both team still excelling offensively. Brighton Miller made three triples in the period and Marissa Brady added another eight points as the Saints' top performers. AQ was able to win the quarter 26-22 thanks to a 13-2 run early in the period that cut the deficit down to six. Rochester quickly responded and ultimately led by 12 heading into the final quarter. Tired legs finally caught up to the two teams in the fourth as the teams combined for a total of 23 points. RU led by double digits the rest of the way en route to the 17-point win.

Aquinas shot the ball at a 34.5% clip by going 20-58 from the floor, 6-18 from deep, and 17-22 from the free throw line. Rochester had a 46.3% shooting percentage including going 11-31 from behind the arc and 7-10 from the charity stripe. 

Brady ended the night with 19 points, eight boards, two blocks, and an assist in her final home game. Miller also finished in double figures with 11 to go along with her two assists and steal. Daz'Sha Day hit the boards hard by finishing with seven rebounds and seven points. Eliza Brown led the team with three assists.

Reemsnyder (9), Mauriya Barnes (5), Brionne Crews (3), Jayda Smith (2), and Jenna Daschke (2) rounded out the scoring for the Saints.

Aquinas outrebounded Rochester by a 40-36 margin as the Warriors had more assists (19-12), steals (18-8), and blocks (3-2).

The Saints will now wait and see how the final four WHAC games play out on Saturday (Feb. 19) to determine seeding for the WHAC tournament.
