The Aquinas men's tennis team came up just short in a close home match to Huntington on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 5). The Saints' home match took place at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Club where the Foresters squeaked out a 4-3 win over AQ.
Aquinas dominated to doubles portion of the match, gaining the point after sweeping all three doubles pairings.
Joel Hancox and
Max Goldbeck-Lowe were in the #1 doubles match and started the day off with the bang. The match was tied 6-6 and the Hancox/Goldbeck-Lowe duo were able to win match point 7-5. In the #2 doubles match,
Nicholas Klak and
Simon Uhlen were able to pull out a 6-4 win. In the final doubles match of the day,
Tom Gangov and
Jackson VanBergen made quick work by defeating the Foresters 6-2.
In the #2 singles match, Gangov came back to win a three set match by the scores of 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 to gain another point for the Saints. Uhlen kept the momentum going from the doubles match into the #4 singles match by winning a point after taking the match 6-1, 6-1.
Unfortunately, Huntington was able to win four out of the six singles matches to take the 4-3 win. Hancox put up a good fight in the #1 singles match, but ultimately fell 6-3, 7-5. Goldbeck-Lowe competed in the #3 singles match and was defeated 6-3, 6-4. Klak went down in the #5 singles match 6-4, 6-3 and VanBergen fell in the #6 singles match 6-1, 6-2.
Aquinas will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 11) with a road match in Holland, Michigan against Hope beginning at 12:00 PM.
