The Aquinas men's tennis team was able to get its second win down in Florida over Bethel on Friday (Mar. 11) after canceling three consecutive matches due to weather. The Saints earned their third straight victory in convincing fashion after the 6-1 win over the Pilots. AQ now has a record of 6-7 on the season and is 5-3 this spring.
The Saints took the doubles point after winning two of the three matches against the Pilots. BU was able to win the #1 doubles match over the team of
Joel Hancox and
Max Goldbeck-Lowe by a 3-6 score. However, AQ recovered as the newcomers pairing of
Tom Gangov and
Josep Coll Llopis dominated the #2 doubles match 6-0, then
Simon Uhlen and
Nicholas Klak took care of business in the #3 doubles 6-3.
Aquinas turned around and dominated the singles matches by winning five out of six of them, all in straight sets. Gangov moved to 6-1 and won his sixth consecutive #2 singles match this semester by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Goldbeck-Lowe had to go a little extra in the first set in the #3 singles, winning 7-5, but then had an easier second set with the 6-1 finish to win his third straight match.
Uhlen is now 4-2 in the #4 singles matches this season, capturing an easy 6-1, 6-3 win. Klak got back on track in the #5 singles spot with the 6-4, 6-1 victory, while Coll Llopis had the most dominant win of the day in the #6 singles, going 6-0, 6-0. Hancox was the only Saint to drop a singles match, finishing 6-7, 3-6 in the #1 singles.
In the exhibition matches that did not count towards the final score,
Mariano Arroyo and
Brandon McEachern won a doubles match 6-1, while
Jackson VanBergen went down in a singles match 4-8.
Aquinas returns to conference action on Friday (Mar. 18) as an away match against Cornerstone is set to begin at 7:00 PM at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Club.
