The Aquinas men's tennis team continues to roll in the WHAC conference win over Cornerstone on Friday (Mar. 18) at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Center. The Saints won by a score of 5-2 over the Golden Eagles. AQ improves to 7-7 (2-0 WHAC) on the season as CU saw its record drop to 10-5 (0-1 WHAC) this year.
The Saints started off strong by gaining the doubles point after winning two of three matches. Doubles partners
Joel Hancox and
Max Goldbeck-Lowe secured the #1 doubles win by a score of 6-4 to improve to 6-3 on the season and 2-0 in the conference.
Nicholas Klak and
Simon Uhlen won the second match in the #3 doubles 6-4, improving to 6-2 (2-0 WHAC) this year.
Josep Coll Llopis and
Tom Gangov went down in the #2 doubles match 3-6. This was only the second time both spring semester newcomers played together so far and are 1-1.
AQ won four of the six singles matches to take home the convincing win. The first win was a classic as Gangov went to a third set in the #2 singles, but he prevailed with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 win to improve to 7-1 (2-0 WHAC) this season. Coll Llopis also gained his second WHAC win in as many matches by winning the #5 match 6-1, 6-4 and is 4-1 this season overall.
Uhlen gained his first conference win of the season and won his third match in a row by taking the #4 singles match 6-4, 7-5. Klak rounded out the wins with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the #6 match to improve to 5-5 on the season.
The only two losses came in the #1 singles as Hancox went down 1-6, 7-5, 3-6 and Goldbeck-Lowe dropped the #3 match 2-6, 4-6.
Aquinas will put its four-match win streak on the line againsr #8 UNOH on Saturday (Mar. 19) with a home match being played in Holland, Michigan, beginning at 4:30 PM.
