AQ Finishes 3-2 on Spring Break Trip in Florida

The Saints gained their third win of the week over Bethel, drop matches to #17 Southeastern and Otterbein

The Aquinas women's team ended the spring break trip going 3-2, gaining its last win over Bethel on Friday (Mar. 11) by a 5-2 score. The Saints also played Otterbein on Friday and dropped the match 2-5, while also sneaking in a shortened match to #17 Southeastern on Thursday (Mar. 10) due to weather and losing the match 0-4. AQ now has a record of 7-9 on the season and are 6-5 this spring.

#17 Southeastern 4, Aquinas 0

The Saints took on their first top-25 team of the season as the match was cut short due to rain, while the men could not even get their match started against SEU. The Fire took the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Sofia Gomez and Joska Volder continued their dominance in the #1 slot, winning 6-3. Unfortunately, Carlota Arzabe and Mimi Pacheco went down in the #2 doubles 2-6, then Vanessa Heylmun and Jenna Hausman fell in the #3 match 0-6.

Only the #4, #5, and #6 singles matches finished before the rain came. Pacheco (0-6, 1-6), Heylmun (2-6, 0-6), and Hausman (2-6, 0-6) were defeated as the trio of Gomez, Arzabe, and Volder did not get to finish their matches.

Aquinas 5, Bethel 2

Gomez and Volder won their 11th straight doubles match over the Pilots by a 6-4 score to lead the Saints to the doubles point. Arzabe and Pacheco also played a big part in the #2 match, winning a thrilling 7-6 match to clinch the point. Heylmun and Hausman were unable to overcome BU in the #3 doubles, falling 1-6.

The top three of Gomez, Arzabe, and Volder breezed through the #1, #2, and #3 singles matches to give AQ three more points. Gomez took her fifth #1 match of the season 6-2, 6-2; Arzabe won the #2 singles for the fourth time this semester 6-2, 6-0; and Volder won her third consecutive #3 singles match 6-0, 6-2.

Heylmun's #5 singles match took a little more effort, but she gained the 7-5, 6-2 win. Pacheco was defeated in the #4 singles 2-6, 2-6, while Hausman was swept in the #6 match 0-6, 0-6.

Otterbein 5, Aquinas 2

In AQ's second match on Friday and last of the trip, the Cardinals started off strong by sweeping the doubles matches. Gomez and Volder fell in the #1 match for the first time in 12 straight matches by the score of 3-6. Arzabe and Pacheco dropped the #2 singles 4-6, while Heylmun and Hausman lost the #3 match 1-6.

Volder was able to collect one of the two points scored by the Saints after taking her fourth straight #3 singles decision 6-1, 6-2. Heylmun secured the other AQ point after claiming the 6-3, 6-2 victory to move to 4-3 in #5 singles matches.

Pacheco had the most entertaining singles match of the day in the #4 singles, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-4, 6-10. Gomez (2-6, 0-6), Arzabe (3-6, 1-6), and Hausman (0-6, 0-6) all also dropped the #1, #2, and #6 singles matches.

Aquinas returns to conference action on Friday (Mar. 18) as an away match against Cornerstone is set to begin at 4:00 PM at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Club.
