The Aquinas women's tennis team competed against Cornerstone, who is receiving votes in the top-25 poll, on Friday (Mar. 18) at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Center. The Saints nearly pulled out an upset, but fell to the Golden Eagles by a score of 3-4. AQ now has a record of 7-10 on the season, including a 1-1 WHAC record, while CU improves to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The doubles matches were tough battles across the board, but it was the Golden Eagles who came away with the point. The doubles team of
Sofia Gomez and
Joska Volder got back on track with a win in the #1 doubles match, winning by a score of 6-4. They are now 13-2 on the season and improve to 2-0 in the WHAC.
The team of
Carlota Arzabe and
Mimi Pacheco fell in the #2 match 2-6, while
Vanessa Heylmun and
Jenna Hausman also went down in #3 doubles 3-6 as CU secured the point. Arzabe/Pacheco are now 4-6 on the season as partners with Heylmun/Hausman also dropping to 2-6.
Each team won half of the singles matches, giving Cornerstone the one point win. Coming off a WHAC Player of the Week performance, Volder continues to roll with a straight sets victory in the #3 match winning by the scores 6-4, 6-3. She is now 11-2 overall this season, including 2-0 in the WHAC, and has won her last six matches.Â
Heylmun had the most exciting match of the day in the #5 singles, but she prevailed with a 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 victory to improve to 10-7 (2-0 WHAC) this year. Hausman also picked up a conference win in the #6 singles, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Gomez, Arzabe, and Pacheco took losses in the #1, #2, and #4 singles matches in straight sets. Gomez (3-6, 5-7), Arzabe (0-6, 1-6), and Pacheco (2-6, 2-6) all suffered their first loss in WHAC play.
Aquinas will take on another team receiving votes in the top-25 poll in UNOH on Saturday (Mar. 19) in Holland, Michigan, beginning at 4:30 PM.
