Aquinas Captures First Win of Florida Trip over Seton Hill

The Saints took on the Griffins on a neutral court and came out with a 5-2 win

The Aquinas women's tennis team has moved to 4-3 in the spring after gaining a nonconference win over Seton Hill (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 6) in Orlando, Florida. The Saints came out with a 5-2 win over the Griffins in their first match of spring break.

After going 1-4 in the fall semester, the women's team has improved to 5-7 overall and are still 1-0 in the WHAC after defeating Lourdes in the first conference competition of the spring last week.

AQ swept the doubles matches to gain the doubles point and lead 1-0 heading into the singles matches. Sofia Gomez and Joska Volder continue to dominate #1 doubles matches as they win their ninth consecutive match and move to 9-1 on the season in the 6-4 win.

In the #2 doubles, Carlota Azrabe and Mimi Pacheco pick up their second win of the semester as doubles partners after taking the match 6-3. Closing out the sweep in the #3 doubles match was Vanessa Heylmun and Jenna Hausman, who collected their first win as doubles partners this year with a 6-1 win.

The Saints won four out of the six singles matches to gain the 5-2 win. The most dominant win came in the #3 singles as Volder took down her opponent 6-2, 6-0 for her fourth #3 singles win of the season. Azrabe continues to impress as the newcomer in the #2 singles spot with her fourth win in five matches after winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

Pacheco won her first #4 singles match of the season after gaining a 6-2, 7-5 victory. In the final win of the day, Heylmun moved the 3-2 in #5 singles with the 6-4, 6-0 win. Gomez was taken down in a tough #1 singles match by the scores of 3-6, 5-7 and Hausman fell in the #6 singles 2-6, 1-6.

Aquinas is next scheduled to take on Kansas Wesleyan down in Orlando, FL on Tuesday (Mar. 8), beginning at 5:00 PM.
