Aquinas Drops Two-Game Series to St. Andrews

After grabbing an early lead, the Saints end up falling to the Knights 8-5

The Aquinas baseball team was not able to hold on to the early lead and dropped the series to St. Andrews on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 8) in Laurinburg, North Carolina. The Saints led 4-2 after the first two innings, but a big fifth inning by the Knights helped them in the 8-5 win. AQ now has a record of 6-9 on the season, while SAU improves to 17-5.

The Saints were able to go up 3-0 in the top of the first inning, with all of the damage coming with one out. Three consecutive singles by Dane Smitz, Nathan Hughes, and Braden Nawrocki got the first run to score with Nawrocki securing the RBI. An error by the Knights helped Hughes score the second run and then Sean Wing collected an RBI single of his own to bring around Nawrocki.

After St. Andrews scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning due to an error on the Aquinas defense, Smitz answered in the second inning with another base hit that was able to plate Aidan Schmuckal. Unfortunately, the Knights got that run back as well in the second inning to make the score 4-2.

SAU scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to give them a 7-4 advantage. An RBI double came in the fourth inning, while a passed ball followed by a three-run home run scored the other four runs in the fifth.

Starting on the mound for AQ was Owen Graves, who did not factor into the decision after allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings of work. Graves surrendered seven hits and three walks, while striking out five. Hunter Morrison came in for the bullpen to begin the fifth inning and saw his record drop to 1-1 after giving up four runs on two hits and two walks.

The next run was scored by Aquinas in the seventh inning after Hughes reached on an error and Grant Martin was able to score.

Nathan Myers came in and work two and a third innings on the hill and only gave up one run to SAU in the eighth. He allowed four hits and struck out two. Riki Yokoyama pitched the final two outs for AQ, recording a ground out and a fly out.

Smitz went 3-5 on the day and collected an RBI, while Nawrocki and Schmuckal had two hits a piece.

The Saints next travel to Columbia, South Carolina to take on Columbia International in a doubleheader tomorrow (Mar. 8), beginning at 11:00 AM.
