Aquinas Drops WHAC Road Doubleheader to Madonna

The Saints are unable to overcome the Crusaders, dropping both games 9-2 and 8-0

The Aquinas baseball team faced Madonna in a make-up WHAC doubleheader on Monday (Apr. 11) in Livonia, Michigan. The Saints could not figure out the Crusaders pitching staff as MU won both games 9-2 and 8-0. AQ now has a record of 15-24 (3-8 WHAC) in 2022, while MU improves to 16-6 (8-4 WHAC) on the season.

GAME 1: Madonna 9, Aquinas 2

The Saints claimed the first run of the ball game in the third inning as Braden Brown opened the inning with a double and Nathan Wilcox followed up with a single to put runners on first and third. Brown was able to score as the Crusaders turned a double play in the next at bat.

Madonna came back to score four runs in the bottom of the inning to claim a 4-1 lead and added another three in the fifth to push the lead up to six. Conor Gausselin (3-3) made the start on the bump and took the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits, three walks, and three hit by pitches in five innings.

AQ added one more run in the sixth after Dane Smitz reached on an error by the Crusaders and advancing all the way to third. Nathan Hughes drove in Smitz on a single to right center field for his team-leading 31st RBI of the season.

Hunter Morrison pitched the sixth inning and gave up the final two runs on two hits and a hit by pitch.

GAME 2: Madonna 8, Aquinas 0

It was all Madonna in game two as Aquinas was unable to push a run across the plate. MU scored a run in the second, two runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth, a run in the seventh, and three runs in the eighth. Josh Avink (0-2) started game two for AQ and allowed three runs on two hits and five walks, while striking out five.

Mason Hill was the first out of the bullpen and lasted one and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs on three hits, two walks, and two wild pitches. Kyle Teachworth pitched the final inning and a third, surrendering three runs on two hits and two walks with two strike outs.
