The Aquinas men's tennis team competed in Spring Arbor, Michigan in the last regular season match against Spring Arbor on Saturday (Apr. 23). The Saints were able to gain its sixth win against non-conference opponents this semester in the 5-2 win over the Cougars. AQ climbs back over .500 at 11-10 on the season, SAU drops to 11-9 on the year.
The Saints were able to win all three doubles matches with ease to take the doubles point, beginning with a 6-2 win in the #1 doubles by
Joel Hancox and
Max Goldbeck-Lowe. They finished the 2021-22 regular season with a 9-5 record as partners.
Simon Uhlen and
Nicholas Klak barely broke a sweat in the #2 match, winning 6-0 to move to 11-3 on the season. The partners of
Tom Gangov and
Josep Coll Llopis rounded out the sweep with a 6-2 win for their first win as doubles partners this year.
Aquinas was able to win four of the six singles matches to claim the 5-2 victory. Gangov improved to 10-3 on the year in #2 singles after a 6-1, 7-6 win. Uhlen won by the exact same score as Gangov in the #4 match to finish the regular season with a 9-8 record. In the #5 singles, Coll Llopis took care of business by winning 6-3, 6-1 for his sixth singles win of the semester. Finishing out the wins was Klak in the #6 match by the score of 6-0, 6-1 to also gain his sixth win of the season.
The two losses came in the #1 singles match as Hancox fell 4-6, 4-6 and Goldbeck-Lowe took a 3-6, 7-6, 6-10 three set loss in the #3 match. A couple extra Saints were able to get some work in as
Jackson VanBergen and
John Elizalde competed together in a doubles match and then separately in singles matches. The duo took a 4-6 loss in the doubles match, while VanBergen fell in his singles match 4-6, 5-7 and Elizalde suffered a 3-6, 6-2, 7-10 defeat as well.
The Saints now move on to the 2022 WHAC Tournament after finishing the conference season 4-2, good for the #3 seed. AQ will face the #6 seed in Lourdes on Friday (Apr. 29) at the Gainey Tennis Courts, beginning at 11:30 AM in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
