Men's Lacrosse Drops WHAC Tournament Semifinal to Siena Heights

The men's lacrosse team began post season play today with the WHAC Tournament Semifinal. AQ hosted the Saints of Siena Heights at the AQ Athletic Field, and after an intense 60 minutes of play Siena Heights bested Aquinas by a score of 9-8 to move on to the conference championship game.

At the conclusion of today's game, AQ falls to a 10-4 overall record while Siena rises to 10-5 overall.

Things got off to a good start for AQ when they drew first blood in the game when they scored at 12:03. This goal came from Joey Fitzgerald. Siena would answer with goal then seven minutes later to tie the game 1-1. Before the end of the period, Mitch Haggart snuck in a goal to put AQ up 2-1.

Siena then got off to a hot start in the second when they scored twice in the first minute, one of which was a man up goal. AQ would respond with a pair of their own goals later when Haggart scored again at 4:44 and Jon Jardis found the back of the net at 1:16 to but AQ back up 4-3 to end the half.

To start the second half, Cam Gunn ran the length of field, uncontested, and scored his second goal of season at 13:13. After here though, the game went in Siena's favor with four unanswered goals in the rest of the third. Going into the fourth the score was 7-5 Siena Heights.

AQ was back on the board again in the fourth with a goal from Zachary Sweet at 11:18. Siena would answer again 8:48. Then two goals within nearly two minutes from Haggart and Hunter Roberts tied the game up at 5:33. Siena struck once more at 4:56 to put a one goal lead on AQ. Aquinas would use the last five minutes making defensive stops and having multiple close goals, but as the clock ran down, AQ was unable to send it to overtime, and suffered defeat.

Clayton Boerigter had a day in net with 10 impressive saves and nine goals against him.

Mitch Haggart lead the team in three categories today with goals (3), points (4), and ground balls (5) while also recording one assist and two caused turnovers. Gabe Schmader matched Haggart on ground balls with five total.

Aquinas outshot Siena Heights today 57-35 but Siena's goalie was able to accrue 25 saves of 33 on goal shots. Siena bested AQ in ground balls (45-41) and faceoffs (16-3).

The men will now await for the NAIA selection ceremony this coming weekend to see if they qualified for the national invitational.
