#9 Saints Survive Scare from Olivet Nazarene in Home Opener

Second-half goal from Laia Cunill makes the difference

Grand Rapids, Mich. — Crosses in from the end line couldn't be stopped. That's how the Aquinas women's soccer team scored both its goals Tuesday evening (Aug. 30) in a 2-1 home opener win over Olivet Nazarene. The Saints moved to 2-1-0 overall while keeping the Tigers winless at 0-3-0 overall.

Olivet Nazarene struck first in the 16th minute off a corner kick. The ball was whipped into the box and pinballed off a few players before freshman forward Melea Miller got enough contact to lift her shot over Aquinas goalkeeper Kayla Shuk. That turned out to be the Tigers' only shot on target for the entire game, meaning Shuk didn't record a save in the victory.

Aquinas didn't fare much better at hitting the frame of the goal. They only managing three shots on target, but at least two of them found the back of the net.

The equalizer came in the 26th minute. Falling out of bounds, senior midfielder Macy Hollingsworth crossed the ball into the box and found sophomore forward Maeva Lichtensteiger waiting on the back post for an easy tap-in. That leveled the teams at 1-1 going into halftime.

Fifteen minutes in the second half, junior forward Laia Cunill buried the game-winning goal. On a similar play to how Lichtensteiger scored, Cunill instead rushed the front post while senior forward Hannah Crum distracted the Tigers' defenders with a couple of crafty dribbles to reach the end line before crossing the ball in. Cunill stepped in front of her defender to win the ball and ultimately won the Saints the game.

Aquinas outshot Olivet Nazarene 11-6 (3-1 shots on target). The Saints had one more corner kick (4-3) and six more fouls (20-14).

AQ picked up two yellow cards in the match: Ariana Garcia (20th minute) and Crum (26th minute).

The Saints remain at home and now prepare for a ranked showdown against #23 Campbellsville on Thursday at the AQ Athletic Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
