Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas men's soccer team was 21 minutes away from a homecoming win over Kalamazoo College on Saturday (Sept. 17) when Jaden Buist dampened the Saints' spirits. Instead, AQ (3-3-1) had to settle for its first draw of the season at 2-2. The Kalamazoo Hornets moved to 2-4-1 overall with the result.
Colin Halloran opened the scoring for the Hornets in the 9th minute with an assist coming from Tony Yazbeck.
Aquinas answered back with two goals four minutes apart in the 27th and 31st minute. The equalizer was buried by sophomore
Mason Sills from
Fin Pittock. It was Sills first goal of the season.
Fellow sophomore
Joshua Clemitson, a defender, put AQ ahead on
Theo Maye's team-leading fifth assist of the season. The Saints took a 2-1 lead into halftime despite being outshot 9-5.
The Hornets continued to press forward in the second half and found their own equalizer in the 69th minute on an unassisted goal by Buist.
No team was able to find a winner in the final minutes, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.
Kalamazoo ended up outshooting AQ 15-8 (6-5 shots on target). Both teams finished five corner kicks (four each in the first half, one in the second half). The Saints had one more foul, 11-10, and both teams picked up two yellow cards.
Aquinas starts conference play next Saturday (Sept. 24) at Concordia. Kickoff at 3 p.m.
