Holland, Mich. — The Aquinas men's and women's tennis teams played its first competitive matches of the season on Friday (Sept. 16) and Saturday (Sept. 17) at the Hope Invitational. The two-day tournament feature four different bracket-style competitions for both the men and women: "A" singles, "B" singles, "A" doubles, "B" doubles.
The Saints won the women's "B" doubles competition with sophomores
Mimi Pacheco and
Carlota Arzabe. After receiving a first-round bye, they won their next three matches by scores of 8-2, 8-6 and 8-3 to win the bracket.
The men's team had two consolation winners. Junior
Jackson VanBergen lost his opening match in the "B" singles tournament but then put together a string of four straight wins, that included a win over his teammate
John Elizalde, to be crown the consolation champion.
Seniors
Nicholas Klak and
Max Goldbeck-Lowe also dropped their opening match together but strung three wins together by scores of 8-4, 8-6 and 8-5 to win the "A" doubles consolation prize.
Other notable AQ men's results include
Brandon McEachern reaching the semifinals in both the "B" singles and then "B" doubles with teammate
Mariano Arroyo. As well as
Tom Gangov,
Josep Coll Llopis and Klak making the quarterfinals of the "A" singles tournament.
On the women's side,
Sofia Gomez made the semifinals in "A" singles and then "A" doubles with teammate
Joska Volder. Pacheco also got to the "B" singles quarterfinals after beating her teammate
Alyssa Jack (6-1, 4-6, 10-4) in the second round.
