Aquinas Women's Rugby Routs GVSU in First Friendly Game

The Saints topped the Lakers 35-0 in sevens competition

Allendale, Mich. – The Aquinas women's rugby program competed in its first ever competition on Saturday (Sept. 17) against the Grand Valley State University Lakers. The two sides competed in a sevens competition and AQ put in a very strong first showing, winning the match 35-0. The Saints are now 1-0 on the season and are off to a great start as a program.

The Saints shared the scoring wealth throughout the match with five different players grounding the ball inside the in-goal area. Liberty Cawthorn, Laura Pointon, Natalie Vaitas, Jenesis Dotson, and Kano Yokoyama all scored tries for Aquinas. Cawthorn was also a perfect five-for-five on conversion attempts, directly crediting her with 15 of AQ's 35 points.

Head coach, Laura Miller, was very proud of her teams' performance this past weekend. This is what she had to say when asked of her thoughts on the game: "The team should be incredibly proud of their effort against Grand Valley. We played with confidence while executing our structure under pressure. We saw outstanding leadership from Cawthorn both in her on field workrate and her ability to hold the team accountable to high standards."

The Saints women are back in action on October 1st with their first home matchup. Aquinas will be taking on Adrian College at Aquinas with the game beginning at 1:30 PM.
