Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Aquinas volleyball squad continued its road trip this weekend with a matchup against (RV) Indiana Tech this afternoon (Sept. 24). The Saints lost an extremely close first set by a score of 29-27 and the Warriors followed that first set win up with two more set wins (25-22, 25-21) to sweep the Saints 3-0. This victory improves Indiana Tech's record to 18-1 on the season.
Aquinas' skid now increases to four games, bringing its overall record to 5-14 with a 2-4 WHAC record.
The first set was quite the back-and-forth battle between the two sides. AQ raced out to a 3-0 lead only for the Warriors to respond and take a 4-3 advantage. There would be six lead changes in total throughout the first set and a total of eight runs of three points or more between the two teams. Aquinas had set points at scores of 25-24 and 26-25 thanks to kills from
Brooke Nicholson. However, the Saints could not quite put Indiana Tech away. The Warriors would take the lead and earn themselves a 29-27 victory in the first set.
Aquinas appeared to have the second set won early with a commanding 18-10 advantage. However, the Warriors would score seven of the next eight points to narrow the lead to just two. With a score of 22-20 in favor of the Saints. IIT would rally and score the next five points and pick up the second set victory of the match.
AQ took an early lead again in the third set, but an 11-point run from the Warriors would give them control of the set with an 18-9 advantage. An eight-point run for the Saints would narrow the lead to 23-20, but it was too little too late for the Saints as Indiana Tech closed out the set with a score of 25-21.
Indiana Tech held the statistical advantage in almost all categories, leading in kills (37-30), hitting percentage (.184-.132), assists (33-27), aces (9-7), and digs (39-36). AQ did beat out IIT in blocks with a five-to-one advantage.
Nicholson led the team in kills with nine on an impressive .471 hitting percentage. She also contributed one block assist and one dig.
Samee Teachworth was the team leader in blocks with two block assists. In addition, she had two kills, a team-high three aces, and six digs.
Jennifer Johnson had eight digs this afternoon while also setting three kills and earning herself an ace.
The Saints conclude their three-match road stand with a trip to Dearborn, Michigan to take on UM-Dearborn. This match is scheduled for Wednesday (Sept. 28) at 7:00 PM.
