Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas men's soccer team could have scored more but the end result was the same — a WHAC home win. The Saints improved to 5-3-1 (2-0 WHAC) with a 2-0 shutout win over UM-Dearborn (3-5-1, 0-2 WHAC) on Wednesday evening (Sept. 28) at the AQ Athletic Field.
Aquinas scored first in the 8th minute off a rebound.
Theo Maye took the initial shot that was pushed aside by Wolverines goalkeeper Elijah Burlak. Rushing in from the wing was Netherlands native
Milan Hoefnagels to capitalize on the loose ball. The junior forward ran up and buried his goal of the season into the top right corner.
The Saints took the slim 1-0 lead into halftime despite outshooting UM-Dearborn 13-4.
Mason Sills, fresh off being named WHAC Offensive Player of the Week for scoring AQ's first hat trick since 2015 last Saturday (Sept. 24), gave the Saints the breathing room they were looking for in the 70th minute. He poked in a cross from
Jasper Schinkel to double AQ's advantage.
The goal tied Sills with Maye for the most goals on the team this season with five apiece.
It was Schinkel's second assist of the season.
Aquinas senior goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto made one save to collect his fourth shutout of the season. The Saints end up peppering Burlak with 21 shots (15 on target). Sills took the most shots (four) and put them all on target.
Four yellow cards were shown in the match, two to each team.
Next up, Aquinas will host Madonna on Saturday (Oct. 1) as the first match of a soccer doubleheader with the AQ women's team. The men will start at noon with the women to follow at 3 p.m. Fans, faculty and students are invited to participate in the first-ever Tailgate With The Saints that will take place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. More information and how to register can be
