Saints Hand Marian First Loss of Season in 2-0 Shutout Victory

A goal and assist from Maye, along with stellar defense gives Saints big win.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The (2-1) Aquinas Saints took to the pitch this afternoon (Sept. 3) to take on the (2-0-1) Marian Knights of Indiana. An early goal from Theo Maye in the first half would prove to be all Aquinas needed to hand Marian its first loss of the season. AQ would pick up an insurance goal early in the second half from Liam Travers to give the Saints a comfortable 2-0 win.

Aquinas now improves to 3-1 on the year after picking up two wins at home this week.

The Saints played stout defense throughout the entirety of the first half, allowing just two shots with none on target. On the attacking side, the Saints were much more efficient, tallying seven shots and putting four on target. Maye would be the one to score first with a cross-body shot into the upper left corner past Marian's keeper. The goal was scored with 29:43 remaining on the clock and was the fourth goal for Maye this season as he now has four goals in four games.

Mason Sills assisted the goal to Maye as he picked up his first point of the season.

As the first half began to wind down, play began to get chippy on both sides. Both teams picked up several fouls and a yellow card a piece. However, the scoreboard would remain the same with both teams entering the locker room with the score still one-to-zero in favor of the home side.

AQ struck again in rapid fashion at the start of the second half. A beautiful set piece from Maye gave Travers a scoring opportunity and he took full advantage of it, placing the volley right over the left should of the Marian keeper. The set piece goal would give Maye his first assist of the season and Travers his first goal of the year.

One of the key stories of the game was the performance of the Aquinas back line. Andrea Ghiggini, Jesunifemi Ojutalayo, Joe Lockey, and Travers played great all game, allowing just five shots total the entire game. Antonio Strassioto had another great game in net, squashing several corners and easily taking care of Marian's only shot on target.

The Saints had a couple more scoring chances in the second half, but none of them materialized into a goal. In the end, Aquinas would walk off the pitch with a 2-0 victory.

In total, AQ outshot Marian in total shots by a margin of 15-to-4. Aquinas also placed more shots on target, leading Marian 6-1.

Both sides saw a fair bit of yellow throughout the match, but especially in the second half. The Saints were shown three yellow cards and the Knights were given four.

The Saints will be back in action this upcoming week with a road matchup against Olivet Nazarene. The Saints will take on the Tigers Tuesday night (Sept. 6) at 7:00 PM.
