Aquinas Draws 0-0 Against Ave Maria

The Saints outshot the Gyrenes 29-4 in scoreless stalemate

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas women's soccer team peppered Ave Maria goalkeeper Maddie Samuelson on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 7) but were unable to score in a 0-0 tie. Samuelson made 13 saves on 29 AQ shots to help the Gyrenes (0-2-3) draw their third match of the season. At the other end of the pitch, Aquinas freshman goalkeeper Kayla Shuk only had to make one save to pick up her second shutout of the season.

The Saints (3-1-1) started the game ranked No. 9 in the NAIA but became No. 11 shortly after kickoff when a new rankings poll was released based off the first two weeks of results.

Six different Saints finished with three or more shots. Leading the way was reigning WHAC Offensive Player of the Week, Laia Cunill, and Maeva Lichtensteiger with five shots each. Macy Hollingsworth (4 shots), Sydney Shenk (4), Hannah Crum (3) and America Lemus (3) all got their looks at scoring what would have been the game-winning goal.

Ave Maria had four players record one shot each.

AQ also put the pressure on with 10 corner kicks, compared to Ave Maria's one.

Aquinas last played to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 3, 2018, against Lawrence Tech. In past seasons, single and double overtimes were needed after a tie in regulation. Under new rules, regular-season matches can now end in a tie after 90 minutes of play.

Next up, the Saints travel to Indianapolis to face No. 7-ranked Marian (4-0-1). The match on Saturday (Sept. 10) is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at St. Vincent Field.
