Adrian, Mich. — The Aquinas women's basketball team hung around in the first half, but didn't have the firepower in the second half to keep up with (RV) Siena Heights.
SHU improved to 15-4 overall (8-3 WHAC) with a convincing 68-44 home win over Aquinas (8-10, 4-8 WHAC) on Saturday evening (Jan. 14). AQ only trailed 26-21 at halftime, but were outscored 42-23 in the second half.
The contest got off to a good start for Aquinas, as the Saints scored the first five points with
Alexis Thomas making a 3-pointer and
Mauriya Barnes adding a jumper. But a pair of triples by SHU erased AQ's lead quickly, tying the score at 6-6.
Aquinas kept the deficit down to three points, 17-14, at the end of the first quarter when
JaKarri Alven made a layup. Alven, along with
Emily Cline, finished with a team-high eight points as the Saints failed to get a scorer into double figures. Alven and Cline combined to shoot 8-for-11 from the floor. The rest of the team made 10 field goals.
AQ finished with 31% shooting percentage compared to SHU's 44.2%. Aquinas did take advantage of SHU's turnovers, scoring 15 points off the Saints' miscues.
Sha'Kyia Parker put up a game-high 26 points (9-for-17 shooting) for Siena Heights. She also had four assists, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
Aquinas returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 18) with another WHAC road contest at Rochester. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
