Rochester Hills, Mich. — Gunner Walters sunk two 3-pointers in the final minute of the first half to drain any momentum the Aquinas men's basketball team had going into halftime Wednesday evening (Jan. 18).
Walters was one of four Rochester players to score in double figures as the Warriors (14-5, 9-3 WHAC) cruised to a 81-56 home win over Aquinas (8-11, 5-8 WHAC) inside the Garth Pleasant Arena.
Rochester sweeps the regular-season series between the two squads, having won 58-52 earlier in the season on Nov. 16 in Grand Rapids.
AQ trailed by double-digits for a majority of the second half after they held a five-point lead, 23-18, with eight and a half minutes remaining in the first half. The Saints shot a season-low 33.8% from the field and watched Rochester pull away by shooting 63.3% (19-for-30) in the final 20 minutes.
The Warriors finished with a shooting percentage of 54.8% with a modest 47.1% (8-for-17) from behind the arc.
Anthony Cukaj led the way with 15 points for Rochester, followed by James Ballard (14), Walters (12) and Stavros Polatoglou (10). Ten different Warriors scored in the contest.
As for the Saints,
Donovan Brown-Boyd scored a team-high 13 points and
Menalito McGee added 11 points.
Gabe Overway came a point and a rebound shy of his third straight double-double, finishing with 9 points and 9Â boards.
Overway remains on the cusp of scoring 1,000 career points at Aquinas, now needing 19 more points. His season-high this year is 20 points against Saint Francis (Ind.) on Nov. 5.
Devon Boyd and
Payton Harley each provided three assists. The Saints only committed nine turnovers — tied for the fourth-fewest in a game this season.
Rochester scored more points in the paint (44-30) and won the rebounding battle (40-34).
Aquinas will look to regroup with a home game on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 7 p.m. against Grace Christian. This non-conference affair was postponed earlier this season and rescheduled for this Saturday.
