Traverse City, Mich. — The Aquinas women's hockey team wrapped up a two-game road trip up north at the Traverse City Showcase tournament on Sunday (Jan. 22) by taking on the Lake Superior State Lakers.
The Saints (7-9 overall) scored first, roughly a minute and a half into the game to break a three-game goalless drought, but the Lakers (5-11 overall) responded with eight unanswered goals to capture an 8-1 victory. LSSU has now won three out of its last four games after losing its first eight games to start the season.
Freshman forwardÂ
Reyna Dominczak scored AQ's lone goal unassisted after creating a turnover in the Lakers' defensive zone. After stealing away the puck, Dominczak flipped a shot on goal that bounced off the goaltender, popped up into the air and dropped in behind with enough momentum to cross the goal line.Â
It was Dominczak's fourth goal and sixth point of the season.
With 6:52 remaining in the first period, the Lakers found the equalizer. LSSUÂ emphatically took the lead with just over three minutes left in the opening frame with two goals in 11 seconds.
After a scoreless second period, the Lakes added five goals in the third period to put the Saints away.
As of Monday morning (Jan. 23), a box score from the contest has not been reported. It will be added when it becomes available.
Aquinas returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 28) against No. 4-ranked Indiana Tech at the Southside Ice Arena. Puck drop at 8 p.m. The Saints recently lost on the road, 3-0, to the Warriors on Jan. 11.Â
