Grand Rapids, Mich. — Four days after scoring his 1,000th point at Aquinas, senior forward
Gabe Overway poured in a season-high 21 points Wednesday night (Jan. 25) against one of the top teams in the conference. The scoring outburst, however, wasn't enough to prevent (RV) Lourdes (16-6, 10-4 WHAC) from picking up a 72-62 road win over the Saints (9-12, 5-9 WHAC) inside the Sturrus Center.
The Gray Wolves were extremely efficient throughout the contest, shooting 56.5% in the first half and 53.8% in the second half to finish with a 56.3 shooting percentage (27-for-48) for the game. It's the highest shooting percentage the Saints have allowed an opponent this season.
At the other end of the court, AQ shot 35.1% and had to fight for a majority of the game to keep Lourdes within striking distance.
The first half featured seven lead changes in roughly the first 15 minutes. Aquinas last held the lead at 21-19 on a layup made by
Donovan Brown-Boyd before a free throw by Charles Swain and a 3-pointer by Jackie Harris lifted Lourdes in front for good.
The Gray Wolves went to the locker room up 33-26 at halftime following an 8-2 run.
Lourdes' lead hovered between eight to 14 points throughout most of the second half. The Saints got within six points a few times late, including under 30 seconds to play after Brown-Boyd made a free throw for his 15th and final point of the game.
Payton Harley was AQ's third player to reach double figures with 12 points, plus five rebounds and four assists.
Andrew Larson, getting his ninth start of the season, chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.
Four double-digit scorers carried the offensive load for Lourdes: Joey Holifield (19 points), Harris (18), Clif Snow (15) and Little Anderson (14).
The Saints have now rotated between wins and losses in their last seven games.Â
Aquinas hosts Lawrence Tech next on Wednesday (Feb. 1) inside the Sturrus Center. It's the Saints second-to-last regular season home game. Tipoff at 7:30 p.m.Â
