Women's Basketball Falls to Cornerstone 63-60 in Rivalry Game

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas women's basketball team hosted crosstown rival, the Cornerstone Golden Eagles in a conference matchup this evening. Despite leading the Golden Eagles at the half, an exciting second half saw the Saints fall by a score of 63-60. 

The Saints dropped to 7-9 overall with a 3-7 conference record while CU goes to 8-8 and 7-2 in conference play. 

The Golden Eagles would get off to a hot start in the first quarter, when they lead the Saints 11-2 at 5:12. The Saints would answer with a run of their own, to lead the Golden Eagles 12-11. A back and forth saw the quarter end 17-16 AQ.

The back and forth momentum continued heading into the second quarter. AQ was able to inch ahead headed into the half with a 16-11 quarter advantage and leading the game 33-27. 

The Saints would continue to press CU after the half outscoring them 19-14. They did this behind a 46% shooting quarter going 6-for-13.

AQ would begin the fourth quarter with their largest lead of the game of 11 points. The Golden Eagles would then shut down the Saints in the final quarter holding them to only 8 points while they scored 22. The final minutes saw both teams hit clutch three pointers with the edge going to CU. The Saints struggled in the full court press committing 10 turnovers and only making 3 field goals. The Golden Eagles would win the game 63-60. 

The Saints shot 40% from the field today and 33% from beyond the arc. They accumulated 37 rebounds and seven steals. 

Brighton Miller and Emily Cline lead the Saints in points with 11 each. Eliza Brown contributed 9 to the Saints total. Jenna Daschke had 4 of the Saints 12 assists.

The Saints will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they host the Madonna Crusaders. The WHAC contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM.
