Calvin Completes Weekend Sweep Over AQ Men's Hockey

The Saints drop Saturday rematch to the Knights, move to 2-3 on the season

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas men's hockey team suffered a 10-1 road loss to Calvin on Saturday evening (Sept. 30) to cap a home-and-away weekend series against their regional rivals. The Saints (2-3 overall) also dropped a 5-3 decision at home on Friday (Sept. 29) to the undefeated Knights (4-0).

Calvin scored three goals in the first period, four in the second and three more in the third to reach double-digits. It's the first time this season that Calvin has scored 10-plus goals. But, it's nothing new for them after having six games last season with that many on the scoreboard, including a 10-4 win over AQ.

The lone goal for Aquinas came with three and a half minutes gone in the second period and the Saints already trailing 4-0. Dylan Rumpke picked up his team-leading fourth goal of the season, 32nd of his AQ career, with Ben Cesario on the assist.

Aquinas kept its streak alive of 15 straight games played, dating back to last season, without being shutout.

Eight different Knights scored in the affair: Keith Schenkel (x2), Jacob Siebenga (x2), Jadon Barron, Lou Vesperini, Ethan Best, Steven Ickes, Noah Kramps and Joel Fonovic.

Calvin outshot Aquinas, 51-21. Both goaltenders played the full 60 minutes. Knights goalie Charles Siso got the win with 20 saves, while Max Johnston made 41 saves in the loss.

The Saints are scheduled to play a mid-week game at Davenport on Wednesday (Oct. 4). Puck drop at 8:30 p.m. from the Patterson Ice Center. AQ beat Davenport at home on Sept. 24, 5-1.
