Scoreless Tie Between AQ Men's Soccer and Lourdes

No goals found despite 29 combined shots, 10 hitting the target

Sylvania, Ohio — The Aquinas men's soccer team played to a frustrating 0-0 draw on Saturday night (Oct. 14) against Lourdes in Sylvania, Ohio.

The scoreless tie snapped the Saints three-game win streak and prevented Aquinas from picking up win No. 10 on the season. Instead, AQ moves to 9-2-2 overall (5-1-1 WHAC), while Lourdes tied once again to go to 2-6-5 overall (2-3-2 WHAC).

The five draws this season is a new school record for Lourdes.

Aquinas dominated possession in the first half and outshot the Gray Wolves, 8-2, and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. The second half was a little more even with the shots only being 11-8 in AQ's favor. Yet, despite the 29 combined shots and 10 of them being on goal (9-1 AQ), nobody managed to score after 90 minutes.

Joshua Clemitson led the Saints with three shots on target, followed by Andrea Ghiggini (2) and Jasper Schinkel (2). Tevan Jones and Yussef Hakmaoui both had one shot on goal each as well.

AQ goalkeeper Antonio Strassioto had to make one save in 89th minute off a shot from Austin Gibbons to earn his seventh shutout this season — 28th of his five-year collegiate career, improving on the all-time school record that he already holds.

This is AQ's second scoreless draw this season. The Saints also tied Trinity Christian, 0-0, on Sept. 9 at home.

Aquinas is 2-0-2 against Lourdes over the last four meetings. The two teams also played to a 0-0 draw (with two overtimes) on Oct. 9, 2021.

Next up, a battle of the Saints. Aquinas hosts Siena Heights on Wednesday (Oct. 18) with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. from the AQ Athletic Field.
